So he was a student as well.

Geo wrote to his younger brother, Arthur, on August 18, 1861 that he "ran away from home" to join up. Arthur, too, ran away from home in 1863 to enlist on a Union gunboat on the Mississippi River.

Geo's mother, Jannett, refused to accept that he died at the Battle of Fair Oaks and she kept a lantern lit and peered down the road each evening till her death, hoping that he would someday return home.

Original letters and a daguerreotype of George in uniform are located at the Library of Congress.

George's commitment and bravery have been remembered and inspired his family for +150 years.

Mary LaneAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37598678.post-68569905665176258622009-11-01T20:34:25.082-05:002009-11-01T20:34:25.082-05:00Our family genealogy, Bible, letters, and oral his...Our family genealogy, Bible, letters, and oral histories tell this:

Jared Miller and Jannett McPherson were married Aug 9, 1842 at Caledonia, Livingston Co., NY.

George Washington Miller was born Sept 2, 1843 at Wheatland, Monroe Co., NY.

While George's occupation was listed as "Farm Laborer" in 1860, the census notes also that he attended school.

George wrote to Arthur on Aug 18, 1861 that he "ran away from home".
