Lewis Thorp Lovejoy was born on May 8, 1835, in Lodi, Cattaraugus County, New York, probably the son of Almon (born 1792 in Connecticut, died in 1880) and Hannah Ames (born 1796 in New York, died in 1880).
Lewis’ parents moved to Steuben County, Indiana and then on to Hillsdale County, Michigan sometime in the 1840s eventually settling in Kent County.
Lewis was probably living in Michigan when he married Pennsylvania native Lydia Spotts (b. 1835) on August 19, 1852 in Hillsdale County and they had at least three children: Sarah (b. 1855), Amanda (1858-1920) and Mary Catherine (1863-1947).
By 1860 Lewis was working as a farmer living with his wife and two daughters in Caledonia, Kent County. Almon was working as a master carpenter living in Paris, Kent County.
Lewis stood 6’2” with gray eyes, brown hair and a light complexion. Had been working as a butcher, and was 25 years old and possibly living in Jamestown, Ottawa County when he enlisted in Company I on May 13, 1861. He was reported in the hospital from April of 1862 through July, and allegedly deserted on August 18, 1862, but was in fact discharged on March 27, 1862, at Annapolis, Maryland, for chronic ulceration of the leg.
It is not known if Lewis returned to Michigan after his discharge.
He may have been living in Wisconsin when he married his second wife Ohio native Anna Louise Rist (1849-1917), and they had at least two children: Almon (1867-1948) and James Edward or Edwin (1868-1956). (It is unknown what became of Lydia.)
Lewis and his wife Anna were living in Wisconsin between 1867 and 1869 but had moved to Michigan and by 1870 he was working as a brick mason and living with Anna and two children in Lowell, Kent County; his parents were living in Tyrone, Kent County in 1870 and in 1880. By 18809 Lewis (or Louis) was living with his niece Helen Hough and her family in Pleasant, Harvey County, Kansas. Also living with them was one Angelette Lovejoy (possibly a stepdaughter). Sometime after 1880 Lewis moved to California where he lived for many years. By 1896 Lewis was running a boarding house in Los Angeles, California, and living at 518 Crocker Street.
He was still living in Los Angeles when he married his third wife Elizabeth Cone (1852-1940) on June 27, 1896 in Los Angeles.
By 1900 Lewis had moved to Camden, DeKalb County, Missouri and in 1910 was living in Adams, DeKalb County, Missouri.
Sometime after moving to Missouri he married his fourth wife, Minerva Killingsworth in Missouri.
In 1875 he applied for and received a pension (no. 152453).
Lewis was probably still living in DeKalb County, Missouri when he died on February 12, 1912 and was buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Weatherby, DeKalb County, Missouri.
