George W. Shaver was born in 1825 in Schoharie County, New York.
George left New York and moved west, eventually settling in western Michigan by the time the war had broken out.
George stood 5’10” with blue eyes, dark hair and a fair complexion and was a 36-year-old laborer probably living in Muskegon County when he enlisted in Company H on May 6, 1861. (Company H, formerly the “Muskegon Rangers,” was made up largely of men from the vicinity of Muskegon and Newaygo counties.) On September 17, 1861, he was reported to be suffering from a severe cold “contracted on the march from Bull Run, July 22, 1861,” and he was discharged for consumption on October 12, 1861, at Fort Lyon, Virginia. According to his discharge he contracted a severe cold during the march from Bull Run on July 21-22, 1861.
There is no further record and no pension seems to be available
