Based on a review of pension records:
Samuel Shaver was born in 1832 in Pennsylvania.
Samuel left Pennsylvania and moved westward, eventually settling in Carmel, Eaton County, Michigan and by 1850 was living with the Silas Millett family.
Samuel married Iowa native Mary A. Hartman (b. 1836) on April 24, 1856, in Ashland, Ohio, and they had at least two children: Roxalina (b. 1857) and Eliza (b. 1863.
Samuel and Mary apparently living in Ohio in 1857 when their daughter was born, and so was Samuel’s older brother Hugh. By 1860 Samuel and his wife and child had settled in Sunfield, Eaton County, Michigan, living on a farm next to Hugh and his family.
Samuel stood 5’11” with gray eyes, light hair and a light complexion and was a 31-year-old farmer possibly living in Sunfield, Eaton County when he enlisted in Company E on December 28, 1863, at Grand Rapids for 3 years, crediting Sunfield, and was mustered the same day. He joined the Regiment on February 10, 1864, was absent sick in the hospital on May 28, 1864, and was still absent sick when he was transferred to Company E, 5th Michigan Infantry upon consolidation of the 3rd and 5th Michigan Regiments on June 10, 1864.
Samuel died of chronic diarrhea on July 7, 1864, at the general hospital in York, Pennsylvania, and was buried in the Civil War Circle section (no. 86) in Prospect Hill cemetery in York.
In October of 1864 Mary was living in Sunfield, Eaton County, when she applied for and received a widow’s pension (no. 44548). She remarried to John Kilpatrick (b. 1820) in July of 1865 and they were living in Woodland, Barry County in October of 1865 when she applied for a minor child’s pension on behalf of her two daughters (no. 67912), which was granted.
