Henry Shaffer was born in 1843.
Henry was 18 years old and may have been living in Oakland County, Michigan, when he enlisted on May 13, 1861, in Company E with his parents’ consent. For reasons unknown he was never mustered into federal service with the Third Michigan on June 10, 1861. He may in fact have enlisted on September 24, 1861 (reportedly 21 years old), in Company F, Eighth Michigan infantry at Fort Wayne for 3 years, and was mustered the same day. If so, he was discharged for disability at Beaufort, South Carolina on March 27, 1862.
Henry may have returned to Michigan where he possibly reentered the service in Company H, Thirtieth Michigan infantry on December 21, 1864, at Flint, Genesee County for 3 years, mustered the same day. He was mustered out at Detroit on June 24, 1865.
