John W. Shaw was born in 1828.
John stood 5’6” with hazel eyes, sandy hair and a light complexion and was a 36-year-old lumberman possibly living in Manistee, Manistee County, Michigan, when he enlisted in Company E on February 6, 1864, at Grand Rapids for 3 years, crediting Manistee, and was mustered the same day. He joined the Regiment on February 10, and was transferred to Company E, Fifth Michigan infantry upon consolidation of the Third and Fifth Michigan Regiments on June 10, 1864, and was reported absent sick in August, and again in October through June of 1865. He was mustered out on July 5, 1865 at Jeffersonville, Indiana.
