James Lorain

James Lorain, also known as “Loraine,” was born around 1834.

James stood 5’6” with blue eyes, brown hair and a light complexion and was 29 years old and possibly living in China, St. Clair County when he became a substitute for John Simmons who was drafted on February 11, 1863, from China for 9 months. James subsequently enlisted in Unassigned on April 30, 1863, at China for 3 years, and was mustered on May 7, 1863, at Detroit.

He was assigned to Company D probably when he joined the Regiment on May 13 at Camp Sickles, Virginia. He was wounded during the Wilderness-Spotsylvania movements and subsequently hospitalized.

James was still absent in the hospital when he was transferred to Company A, Fifth Michigan infantry upon consolidation of the Third and Fifth Michigan Regiments on June 10, 1864, and he was reported absent sick through September and again absent sick from April of 1865 through June. He probably remained absent sick until he was mustered out as absent sick and as Corporal on July 5, 1865, at Jeffersonville, Indiana.

No pension seems to be available.
