Robert H. Smith was born in 1843.
Robert stood 5’10” with blue eyes, fair hair and a fair complexion and was a 21-year-old laborer probably living in Adrian’s Second Ward, Lenawee County, Michigan, when he enlisted in Unassigned on March 5, 1864, at Adrian for 3 years, crediting Adrian’s Second Ward, and was mustered the same day at Detroit.
There is no further record, nor is there a service record for him in the Third Michigan infantry records found at the National Archives.
In fact he was probably the same Robert H. Smith who was 24 years old and enlisted in Detroit on March 5, 1864 in Company H, Third Michigan cavalry, and was mustered the same day. He was mustered out on February 12, 1866 in San Antonio, Texas.
