Samuel Levagood Dodge

Samuel Levagood Dodge was born in 1844, in Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada, the son of Owen (1818-1912) and Mary (Levagood, 1823-1867).

Owen and Mary were both born and raised in Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada, and were married in Waterloo about 1841. They resided in Waterloo for some years but sometime between 1854 and 1856 Owen settled his family in Gaines, Kent County, Michigan where they lived the rest of their lives. By 1860 Samuel was working as a farm laborer, attending school with his siblings and living on the family farm in Gaines.

Samuel was 18 years old and possibly living in Cascade, Kent County, Michigan, when he enlisted at the age of 18 in Company A on November 15, 1861, at Grand Rapids for 3 years, and was mustered on December 28 at Detroit. He was killed in action on May 31, 1862, at Fair Oaks, Virginia, and was presumably among the unknown soldiers buried at Seven Pines National Cemetery.

His father was still living in Gaines in 1870 and still living in Michigan in January of 1892 when he applied for and received a pension (no. 352283). (Owen and Mary are both buried in Blain cemetery in Gaines.)
